When people talk about LGBTQ+ life in Israel, Tel Aviv is often the first place that comes to mind. It is certainly one of the country’s major LGBTQ+ hubs, but Israel’s queer community is much bigger than one city.
Across the country, there are local communities, youth groups, initiatives for parents and families, trans communities, religious and traditional LGBTQ+ groups, cultural projects, and municipal support programs.
That is exactly why GAYIL was created — not only as an events calendar, but also as a place where you can find your community — wherever you live.
LGBTQ+ Life Doesn’t End Outside Tel Aviv
Every city and region has its own character.
In some places, LGBTQ+ centers and Pride Houses are active. In others, communities are built around smaller groups, municipal initiatives, youth programs, or support organizations.
For example, our database includes communities and initiatives in Ramat Gan, Givatayim, Ramat HaSharon, Herzliya, Kfar Saba, Ra’anana, Netanya, Rishon LeZion, Rehovot, Petah Tikva, Ashdod, Be’er Sheva, Modi’in, and other cities.
This matters: LGBTQ+ life doesn’t exist only where large parties or Pride parades take place.
Sometimes it looks like a small local group, a meetup, an educational program, or simply a few people who meet regularly.
Communities Can Be Very Different
There is no single LGBTQ+ community that fits everyone.
Some people want to meet others their own age. Others are looking for support as parents. For some, a religious or cultural space is important. For others, finding a trans or gender-diverse community is especially meaningful.
In Israel, there are initiatives and groups for many different audiences, including:
- LGBTQ+ youth;
- trans and gender-diverse people;
- parents and families;
- women;
- older adults;
- religious and traditional LGBTQ+ people;
- Russian-speaking and English-speaking participants;
- Arabic-speaking LGBTQ+ people;
- students;
- local city-based communities.
For example, our data for Netanya includes groups for trans people and older adults, a parents’ group, as well as youth groups from IGY. In Modi’in-Maccabim-Re’ut, our data includes Tehila/PFLAG groups for parents, as well as separate religious and secular directions.
What About Smaller Cities?
This is one of the most interesting parts of Israel’s LGBTQ+ map.
The research on which we are expanding the GAYIL directory shows LGBTQ+ initiatives far beyond the country’s largest cities.
Among them:
Central Israel:
Ramat Gan, Givatayim, Ramat HaSharon, Herzliya, Kiryat Ono, Or Yehuda, Holon, Bat Yam, Modi’in, Rishon LeZion, Kfar Saba, Ra’anana, Hod HaSharon, Netanya, Rehovot, Petah Tikva, and others.
North:
Kiryat Bialik, Kiryat Tivon, Hadera, Nesher, Tirat Carmel, Pardes Hanna-Karkur, Misgav, Katzrin, Tiberias, and Nahariya.
South and other regions:
Ashdod, Be’er Sheva, and other communities are also represented in GAYIL’s data.
In some cities, there are full LGBTQ+ centers. In others, there may be municipal support, youth groups, cultural events, or local initiatives. The source also notes that the current contact details and status of some groups should be checked and verified.
Finding a Community Means Finding People
Moving to a new city or country can sometimes feel like starting from zero.
Where can you meet people?
Where can you go?
Are there people nearby with similar experiences?
Where can you simply feel like you belong?
This is where local LGBTQ+ communities can make a real difference.
It might be a first meeting, a small group meetup, a cultural event, a Pride initiative, or simply a place where people know one another.
And you don’t always need to find a large community.
Sometimes, finding a few people who feel like your people is enough.
How GAYIL Helps You Find It
We want discovering LGBTQ+ life in Israel to be simple, without requiring you to know the exact name of an organization or live in Tel Aviv.
On GAYIL, you can explore:
Events — what’s happening now and coming up.
Places — LGBTQ+-friendly places and spaces.
Communities — organizations, groups, and local communities.
Map — see what’s around you.
This approach helps you see LGBTQ+ Israel not as a handful of separate centers, but as a large network of people, communities, places, and events across the country.
Your Community May Be Closer Than You Think
If you live in Tel Aviv, there are countless opportunities around you.
But if you live in Petah Tikva, Rehovot, Ashdod, Netanya, Tiberias, Nahariya, or a smaller town, that doesn’t mean LGBTQ+ life is far away.
There may already be a group, organization, or initiative near you that you simply haven’t discovered yet.
That’s why we continue expanding the GAYIL map.
Because LGBTQ+ Israel is not one city.
It is many cities.
Many communities.
Many stories.
And many people who want to feel part of something bigger.
