Welcome to GAYIL: One Place for Israel’s LGBTQ+ Community
By the GAYIL Team
Moving to a new country is not always easy. Even after arriving in Israel, finding an apartment, and starting a new job, there can still be one question that is harder to answer: Where is my place? Where are the people I can feel comfortable with? Where can I meet new friends, attend events, find a community, or simply sit somewhere that feels like home?
For LGBTQ+ people, these questions can be especially meaningful. Israel’s LGBTQ+ community is large, diverse, and active, but information about it is still spread across many different places. One event is posted on Instagram, another on Facebook, a community gathering is listed on an organization’s website, a party is promoted by a club, and a city event appears on the municipality’s website. Sometimes you need to know the right people or know exactly where to look just to discover that something is happening.
GAYIL was born from this need.
GAYIL is a project designed to bring Israel’s LGBTQ+ community life together in one place. Not just parties and nightlife, but a whole world of events, places, and communities.
Our goal is simple: to help people discover what is happening around them, find people with shared interests, and feel that they have a place within the community.
GAYIL was not created as a dating website. We do not want to create another place where people mainly look at photos and search for a match. We want to create something different — a website that can help someone leave the house, attend an event, discover a new place, join a group, and experience the community through real life.
Start with a Simple Search
Sometimes finding a community starts with a very simple question:
What’s happening today?
Someone can visit GAYIL and search for events in their area. They can see what is happening in Tel Aviv, Haifa, Jerusalem, or another city in Israel. They can search for a party, drag show, lecture, social gathering, cultural event, or community activity.
But behind that search, there is something much more meaningful.
An event is not just a place and a time. Behind every event are people. People who decided to create something, people who came to it, and people who might meet each other for the first time.
Sometimes one meeting is enough to change an entire evening. Sometimes it leads to a new friendship. Sometimes someone arrives alone and comes back the next time with friends. And sometimes they simply discover that there are other people like them.
That is one of the reasons we want to make this information accessible.
Community Is About Much More Than Nightlife
When people talk about Israel’s LGBTQ+ community, it is easy to immediately think of Tel Aviv, clubs, parties, and nightlife. All of these are part of the community, but they are certainly not the whole community.
Some people find themselves through culture and art. Others prefer a sports group, a small social gathering, a lecture, or a workshop. There are LGBTQ+ families, religious communities, groups for women, groups for men, trans communities, groups for younger people, and communities for older adults.
There are also communities built around a shared language or cultural background. People living in Israel come from many different parts of the world, so there are people who feel at home speaking Hebrew, English, Russian, Arabic, and other languages.
All of these people are part of the story.
That is why GAYIL is built around three main things: Events, Places, and Communities.
Events tell us what is happening now.
Places show us where the community comes together.
Communities connect us with people who share our interests, experiences, or simply the desire to be together.
Find a New Place in Your City
One of the important things about GAYIL is the ability to discover places.
When you arrive in a new city, even simple things can be unclear.
Where can you go in the evening? Where are events happening? Which places are known by the community? Where can you meet people?
A place is much more than an address on a map.
It can become part of people’s lives.
A café can become the place where friends meet every week. A community center can become a home for a group. A club can become a place where people celebrate together. A beach or park can become a meeting point. A cultural venue can give creators from the community a place to share their work.
Over time, we want to build a map that shows not only where these places are, but also the diversity of community life across Israel.
Find Your People
In the end, all the technology and all the information on the website lead to one thing:
People.
Community is created when people meet.
Sometimes they meet because of a shared hobby. Sometimes because they live in the same city. Sometimes because they speak the same language. And sometimes simply because they want to meet new people.
One person may be looking for a running group. Another may be looking for a women’s community. Someone else may be looking for a group for young people or a community for families. Someone new to Israel may be looking for people who speak their language.
There is no single answer that works for everyone — and that is exactly the point.
GAYIL should not decide which community is right for you.
It should give you the opportunity to see what exists and make your own choice.
People New to Israel Should Feel That They Have a Place Too
For a new immigrant, building a life in Israel can take time. You have to learn the language, understand how things work, get to know your city, and build a circle of friends.
Within all of this, finding a community can be very important.
Sometimes it is difficult to ask people where the LGBTQ+ community is. Sometimes you do not even know what terms to search for on Google. Sometimes you know that activities exist, but you do not know where they are being promoted.
We want GAYIL to be a simple starting point.
You do not need to know someone in advance. You do not need to know all the places. You do not need to be part of a closed group.
You can simply visit, search, and discover.
That is also why we want to gradually make GAYIL more accessible to people who speak different languages. Israel’s community is made up of many different people, and being able to understand the information is an important part of being able to participate in it.
The Community Is All Across Israel
GAYIL is not meant to be a website only about Tel Aviv.
Tel Aviv is an important center of LGBTQ+ life in Israel, but it is not the only place where community exists.
There is activity in Haifa. There is a community in Jerusalem. There are groups and people in Beersheba and many other cities. There are small initiatives in places where information can sometimes be harder to find.
We want to give them a place too.
For someone living in a large city, it may be relatively easy to find an activity. But for someone living in a smaller city, the options can be much less obvious.
Sometimes there is a group, but very few people know about it. Sometimes an important event takes place, but receives little exposure.
GAYIL can help connect these things and give people the opportunity to discover what is happening outside the center of the country as well.
Not Everyone Is Looking for the Same Thing
One of the things we want to remember throughout this journey is that the LGBTQ+ community is not one uniform group.
We share some experiences, but everyone’s life is different.
Someone loves parties.
Someone else prefers a cultural evening.
Another person wants to join a sports group.
Someone is looking for a religious community.
Someone wants to meet other women.
Another person simply wants to make new friends in their city.
There is no single right way to be part of the community.
That is why GAYIL is not here to tell people how to live or where to go.
It is here to show possibilities.
We present the events, places, and communities.
You choose what is right for you.
Community Is Something That Lives in the Real World
We live in a time when a large part of our lives happens on screens.
We communicate online, look at photos, read messages, and receive information quickly.
But real community is also created outside the screen.
It happens in a conversation around a table.
In laughter with friends.
At a weekly gathering.
While dancing.
Playing a game.
At a lecture.
At a small event.
At a big party.
In the moment when a new person walks into a room without knowing anyone, and someone says:
“Come over. Sit with us.”
We want GAYIL to help create more moments like these.
The website is only the starting point.
The goal is for people to find something that interests them and then move from the screen into the real world.
GAYIL Is Not Here to Replace the Community
We do not want to replace the organizations, groups, places, or people who are already building the community.
Quite the opposite.
We want to help them be seen.
A small group that has just started should be able to find new people. A community organization should be able to reach a wider audience. A venue that hosts events should be discoverable. A local event should have the opportunity to reach people who have never heard about it before.
GAYIL can be the connection between all of these things.
The communities themselves create community life.
We want to build the place where people can discover it.
What’s Next?
GAYIL is only at the beginning of its journey.
We want to add more events, more places, and more communities. We want to reach more cities and discover more local initiatives. We want to improve search, the map, and the ways people discover new content.
But just as importantly, we want to listen.
What is missing for you?
What information is difficult to find?
Which community is still missing from the website?
What event should people know about?
Which place is important to you?
What would you like to see on GAYIL one year from now?
The answers to these questions will help us build the project.
Because in the end, GAYIL should not be a website that talks about the community from the outside.
It should be a place built together with the community.
A Place for Everyone
Maybe you have been part of the community for many years.
Maybe you have only just started looking for your place.
Maybe you have lived in Israel all your life, or maybe you arrived here recently.
Maybe you are looking for friends, a group, an event, or simply want to know what is happening in your city.
There is a place here for all of you.
We believe that a strong community begins when people are able to find it.
Sometimes all it takes is one piece of information at the right moment.
One event someone discovered.
One group someone found.
One place where someone felt comfortable for the first time.
From there, things can grow.
A friendship can begin.
A community can form.
A sense of belonging can emerge.
And that is exactly what we want to do with GAYIL: create one place where people can discover LGBTQ+ community life across Israel — simply, without needing to know in advance where to look.
Events. Places. Communities.
This is only the beginning.
Welcome to GAYIL.
